I have been using Sun products in some form or another for over 20 years and applaud them for buying MySQL for any of the following reasons and more.

1. It keeps Microsoft at bay.
2. They actively support opensource and will keep MySQL running.
3. Perhaps they will build in some good old fashioned Sun quality and improve an already decent database.

I can only hope that they will not do something crazy like try to build a native Java version of MySQL. If they do, I am outta here and hopping onto Postgres.

Robbie:

Is there some subtext to your choice of CMS? I had to say it, it was out there and I just had to say it.

Dustin:

It was good talking to you in Manhattan even though I almost didn't recognize you. Give me a call when you have a moment.

ReBlogGirl: I agree that Sun is one of the few tech companies in the internet space that has really earned the respect that they get. Jonathan has done a phenomenal job not only reaching out to the community, but also building/buying products that make sense in an open-source world.

Sun is the natural buyer for MySQL and a huge proponent of Open Source. Just look what they did for OpenOffice (a free and more stable (I might add) version of MS Office). Their corporate culture is centered around the idea of Open Knowledge and stability. The only other company I respect more than Sun is Borland.

Kinda makes me glad I use SubText w/ MS SQL. :) Besides, I hear all the cool kids use PostgreSQL anyway. Still, it'll be interesting to see what happens.

Loren,

I don't think it is a huge deal... but it is definitely interesting. Sun continues to evolve in some fascinating ways and they are definitely look to play a more central role in the world of open-source. I happen to think it is worth keeping tabs on their billion dollar moves. :)

If Microsoft bough MySQL, there would be a huge uproar. Overall Sun creates solid software (JAVA) and solid oparting systems (SOLARIS).

My AMP of choice is XAMPP. Google it!

is it really a big deal?

MySQL is open source

them buying it doesn't mean that it becomes closed source.
