Capturing the Hallway Conversations at NAR
Last Friday one of my companies, Spinnio, ran a live video chat with David Arquette at his Propr Clothing store that was hosted by Shira Lazar. It was so much fun with the two of them (and the many guests that walked into the store during the event) that it’s inspired me to do something similar at NAR this year.
My hope is to create a place to capture some of the most interesting banter of a conference… i.e. the hallway conversations…and then invite you’all to take part. So, I recruited a partner in crime with the plan being that we’re going to stream live video conversations to Spinnio.com throughout the weekend (starting at RE BarCamp San Diego).
And if you want to take part in our conversations, I’ve set it up so you can ask questions and leave comments directly on the Spinnio page using either Facebook or Twitter. In other words, we’re not only going to do mobile video, but we’re bringing in the two most popular social networks so you can take part from anywhere in the world.
The only catch with this operation, is that I have no idea when we’re actually going to turn the cameras on… (although I expect it to be often). So if you want to be notified, make sure to follow Spinnio on twitter, where we’ll do our best to give some head’s up! (Won’t hurt to also make sure you’re following @tyr and @ribeezie since I’m sure we’ll be letting people know through those accounts as well)
And finally, if you know someone who should get some time on Spinnio (maybe you!), let me know. As I “confirm” guests for specific times, I’ll update this post!
UPDATE
Ricardo and I are going to use a shared google calendar in order to track guests and allow you to see who we’ve scheduled and when. Here it is:
Leroy
Will follow you on twitter.

Having way too much fun with Facebook video streaming…

I’ve been playing pretty hard with Facebook streaming video this week… including an interesting movie promotion. However, because I’m playing with a new Facebook chat feature through RCG’s Facebook Connect, I decided to post about it over there, so please check out this post on RCG: Live Video Streams on RCG? With Facebook Chat?

Geeking with Gmail
Things have been pretty quiet around here lately as I’ve been just swamped with work. The work is really good stuff and I’ve been getting my hands dirty in all kinds of interesting projects. I’m not ready to say who any of my clients are, but I’ve currently got some really interesting clients (almost none of whom are in the real estate space) and loving the work.
Anyway, for reasons I’m not ready to get into, I’ve been playing with Seesmic for the past few days and having a lot of fun with it. If you don’t know, Seesmic is an online video community where folks get together to chat. The potential is pretty darn high and it really doesn’t take long to connect to other folks.
All of which leads me to the video that I just posted on Seesmic… I called it Geeking with Gmail and spend a few minutes talking about how I’ve been using gmail to keep my email-life organized. Maybe you’ll find it interesting/helpful.
And because I mention it in the video, here’s a link where you can sign up for the free hosted version of Google App.
By the way, if you have a webcam and want to test Seesmic out, things are set up so that you only need to leave a video comment on this post to take part! (Click on the “Add a video comment with Seesmic” option at the bottom of this post!)

Great! So that’s what I look like when posting to 4Realz late at night. Video is so revealing
I caught this on Seesmic and thought it was limited to the community there. Anyways… more tomorrow after some rest and a shave.

hey, no worries at all.. what’s more social then letting it all hang out. -
ARDELL
I’m a PC
and I’m back to my Outlook. Though I do like to store large files in my gmail. Nothing…nothing…beats Outlook. -
Loren Nason
@Ardell – i’ve got one thing that beats Outlook….
Outlook plus hosted exchange!
I am a PC
-
Kevin Tomlinson
Ok.
I have a microsoft exchange server email that costs me $100/mo.I’m confused—I have a feeling that gmail could do a lot more, or the same, for free.
No? Yes?
HELP!
-
Loren Nason
I use sherweb.com for exchange hosting. It only costs 8.95 a month per account for 3gigs of storage.
-
Kevin Tomlinson
@loren
wouldn’t/couldn’t gmail take the place of all this stuff?
-
Loren Nason
@kevin
Yes it could but I didn’t like it.
The syncing of outlook/exchange is FAR above anything else out there. The syncing of outlook/windows mobile/iPhone/blackberry/palm from the exchange server just can’t be matched. When using exchange and syncing to multiple computers/phones it just can’t be beat when everything is on every device you own including a Mac with Outlook or entourage
It just works. Even Jobs himself acknowledges the great job that Exchange can do, thats why it’s on the iPhone 2.0
I tried going to gmail and I just didn’t like it. That doesn’t mean you won’t like it. It just wasnt for me. I’ve been using Exchange for 11 years now. and for the price I pay i will not dump it
-
Loren Nason
Dustin, I knew you would disagree
Google Apps is good and I have set it up for many of my clients. Google apps works good with blackberry from what i have heard. I do not like having to use 3rd party utils to sync up windows mobile with Google Apps.
Kevin,
Either way to really find out if Google Apps is for you, you have to set it up and try it.
-
Galen
I’m going to disagree too. IMAP pretty much does everything you need for email, but if you’re 100% hooked on exchange, nuevasync does the rest. I use it to wirelessly sync my Google calendar, ical and iphone. It’s fantastic. Add to ical, wait 20 seconds, it’s on the iphone (and the other way around).

I may embarrass myself here but clearly, it won’t be the first time, so here goes…
I use Top Producer. *blush*
I have hated it for years but didn’t know what else to use. This video stream has helped immensely. I was about to start using Outlook but this helped me rethink that just a bit.
I’ve been using Google Apps (thx Loren) and still need to work on the filter process but I’m getting there. I also need to finish moving my contacts into my account.
I love, love the calendar. My assistant can access it and my husband can access it. I just started thinking about setting up my company’s calendar for all my agents to access. It’s color coded and I love that it syncs so easily to my Blackberry. That one feature, accessibility, makes all the difference in the world to me!!
I’m getting a little more tech savvy – one slow step at a time.

I have been on gmail for a couple of years now and I love it. Over the years Google has incorporated everything that you would need when managing your emails and your life. I recently started using it for business, and it couldn’t be easier. Everything is synced, shared, and accessible. There is nothing better!

Dustin,
We’ve been using Google Apps for our team here in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It has been seamless in use with our blackberries, and outlook on our computers.
The ability to share calendaring and documents has made this the best decision for our team. And yes, the cost is unbeatable!
-
Melissa | Talk SF Real Estate
This is great information. I just have to say that I love gmail, the Google Calendar, and Google Docs. I also have Outlook at the office, and I do like outlook, but I like the google applications more. I really like how you can share the calendar and the docs with everyone. The docs especially help me for my blog.

Seattle story? Real estate gossip? Where to post?
I was having a hard time deciding if I should post this story on RCG or 4realz.net, because it would work on both sites…
(Not Just) another Seattleite rudely introduced to city’s vigilant jaywalking enforcement… It’s David Gibbons:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYMCYPQTfaI]
-
anonymous
Yeah, I’m sorry, but why was this posted? Why shouldn’t someone who breaks the law by disregarding the “walk” signal be cited?
-
Dustin
The beauty of running my own blog is that I get to post whatever I want. And if David G makes the news in an amusing way, I’m definitely game for blogging it!
-
Tim
Seems like it’s in the air up here in the Evergreen State! Got mine last week ($124), but for “allegedly” speeding. 5 blocks from my house. Grrr.
-
Jf.sellsius
I put it up too. My takeaway was David’s spin of the facts… a ticket for “walking, yes walking” (love the accent and delivery)— he just left out the part about “against the Don’t Walk” sign– fortunately, he kept the camera on long enough for the officer to add the unlawful part. Good thing sarcasm is still legal in Seattle or he could have been thrown in the slammer. Very funny.
-
Dave Bethoney
Yeah this is pretty crazy! Throughout the three and a half years when I lived in Seattle, I think I’ve heard of this happening about 2 or 3 times. They sure do take jaywalking over there pretty seriously!
-
David G from Zillow.com
When I posted this to youtube I really didn’t think it would get this kind of pickup – I just wanted to show my friends overseas that you really can get a fine while walking in the US. And yes, Joe, I obviously know that I walked on “don’t walk” yet pretty much everywhere else in the world (including much of the US – thankfully) you can do just that without fear of being fined. Seattle is special though it does occasionally happen in other big cities.
“Why shouldn’t someone who breaks the law by disregarding the “walk” signal be cited?”
1 in 100 Americans are currently in jail. Think about it. My ticket is just one ridiculous example that illustrates how we’ve gone too far. But before I go too far, let me make it clear that I only discuss politics over margaritas so if you want to get into it with me you’re gonna’ have to buy me a drink at Inman SFO.
-
Dustin
I’ll not only buy the margarita, I’ll happily provide the video camera to record the conversation as well!
-
pasadenaviews
Good for David and Luther for posting the video. There are people jay walking all over the world. Making money on this is ridiculous. Whatever happened to just giving a warning. I’m sure the police man’s mama is real proud that her son is protecting the streets in such a way and helping Seattle add to its coffers.
BTW, if we send the officer to New York or Italy, he’ll have a full time job trying to hand out jaywalking tickets and he’ll get paid overtime too. He’ll be in heaven!
-
pasadenaviews
BTW Dustin… As I’m looking at my comment, I sort of like the way “Luther” looks. Very official looking… fast fingers, slow mind – first thing in the am.

Jeff Turner announced the latest video project from…
…Real Estate Shows. It’s a tool that automatically turns a Real Estate Shows virtual tour into a video format that can be widely distributed on the internet. Jeff gave me the low-down on this project a little bit ago, and he convinced me that this was not an easy task to do right… But that he felt really good about the technology they were using to convert and compress the video.
I know that some would say that virtual tours aren’t video (they said it today during our roundtable on video), but by simply exporting their shows to video format, the Real Estate Shows team is opening up a ton of new distribution opportunities…
-
Missy Caulk
This is very exciting, now we can export to realtor.com on the video feature as well as Flickr and YouTube all with the click of the mouse.
-
Dave Bethoney
Congrats to Jeff and team! This sounds like a great feature and one that will surely be welcomed.
-
Nick Bastian
Video becomes more popular every day as an excellent way to reach an audience. Congrats to Jeff and his team for always being ahead of the curve..
-
Lisa Heindel
Congratulations to Jeff and the RES show team for remaining on the cutting edge and always looking for ways to increase user satisfaction. This remains some of the best money I spend every year.
-
Dustin
I’m with everyone else leaving comments that they’re definitely on to something with this release!

This sounds very similar to what you can do with lightroom. Has anyone tried a hands on test??

4realz Roundtable: Marketing Real Estate with Video
[Note: This turned out to be an awesome conversation... You can see who participated in the call as well as listen to the conversation at the bottom of this post!]
On this week’s 4realz Roundtable, I’m really looking forward to discussing marketing with video… and in particular, how real estate agents are effectively using video to promote themselves, their communities and their listings.
My concept of video is pretty broad and includes virtual tours… Some of the companies I imagine we’ll cover include ways to market using YouTube, TurnHere, WellcomeMat, Real Estate Shows, Vimeo, MLBroadcast Vidlisting, and Utterz.
PLEASE NOTE:
Because I don’t want to butt the roundtable up too close to the forth of July weekend, I’m MOVED the time to Wednesday, July 2nd. So, for this week only, please join us at 4pm on Wednesday for what should be a great Roundtable! As always, the call in telephone number and links to the chat can be found on this page: http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/20339
UPDATE:
We had such a great conversation! I really want to thank all the people who joined up to take part in the conversation including:
- Todd Carpenter of Mariah
- Ian Watt
- Ted Mackel
- Christian Sterner of WellcomeMat
- Michael Price of MLBroadcast
- Morgan Brown of TurnHere
- Nashua VirtualTours
You can listen to the conversation here:

Well I was going to submit a seesmic video comment but……………
Great show Dustin!

but…. my wordpress.com backend won’t allow for that feature.
It’s time for me to move over to the self-hosted option!

Thank you very much Dustin. That was sooo much fun to be apart of your program today. When you have time, I would love to be apart of a discussion about “transparency in real estate and how some old school ways of thinking have just got to go”. Have a great day
Ian
PS Here’s a video blog for you (sorry bumpy road) http://www.ianwatt.ca/RealEstateVideos

Thanks for the opportunity to participate. Looking forward to many participants in your REBarcamp “Deep Dive”

Ian: What an awesome video! Thanks so much for the great comments about the video and I definitely look forward to having you on board again soon. You’re doing some great stuff with video and it’s a lot of fun to watch!
Dustin
A shout out to both Mike and Ted: Thanks again for taking part in the roundtable!

Estate market price keep dropping since the explode of subprime crisis.
Don’t think the effect has gone, big impact is yet to come.
Better get ready for recession. Prevention is better than cure.

The funny thing is, as I watch that video – all I can wonder is how incredibly difficult they will be to finance. Could you imagine that condo questionnaire?
Pathetic to get inside the mind of a mortgage lender huh?…
Good thing most of those buyers will be loaded with cash.
-
Greg Tracy
Nice to see what all that oil money is being used for…
-
Dustin
Greg: That same thought occurred to me as well… Wild world we live in.
-
Andrew
my building cant even get the brand new elevator to work right. I can’t see this working out. condo fees will have to increase often. lol
-
Dustin
Yeah… Having a car elevated to your floor seems ridiculous!
-
Steve Belt
If I was filthy rich and could afford such a condo, and if it were in the US, I’d be a buyer tomorrow. The “cool” factor for something like that in NYC especially would be almost too much to pass up on, even if it were $2k/sq ft. 2000 sq ft for $4M, really is not that crazy when Scottsdale has non-moving condos over-looking “water” (actually a man made canal) for $1.5M.
